Essay Questions. Answer 2 questions only. Time allowed 1 hour 30 minutes.

1. Molecular testing for some single gene disorders may be a useful adjunct to biochemical testing and assist with the making of a diagnosis. Discuss.
2. Write an essay on the role of folate and Vitamin B12 in normal metabolism and disease.
3. Discuss the laboratory and clinical investigation of the acute porphyrias.
4. Describe in brief, red blood cell formation (erythropoiesis) and the normal and abnormal synthesis of haemoglobins (haemoglobinopathies).

OR

Write an essay on the factors to be considered in the initial stages of the development of an HPLC method for the measurement of  a  substance  in serum.
